Abstract

This study deals with the assessment of reverse logistics on used water and soft drink plastic bottles in Addis Ababa. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the organization, effectiveness and efficiency of the process and the actors involved in the reverse logistics system. Further, the thesis attempts to analyze the role of all stakeholders starting from the producers of water and soft drinks, government offices, consumers and other formal and informal organizations involved in collection and recycling of used plastic bottles. Primary and secondary sources of data were used to gather data from different stake holders through self administered questionnaires to micro and small scale enterprises and informal solid waste collectors or qorale’s and interviews with COBA IMPACT plc, bottler companies, Addis Ababa solid waste management and cleansing agency selected by using purposive sampling method briefly shown in the third chapter. The detailed analysis and interpretation of the data collected using graphs, tables and pie charts as well as grouping of responses given for the open ended questions and interview questions done in the fourth chapter. Finally the findings of the research and the recommendations given by the researcher are included in the fifth chapter. the reverse logistics process of used water and soft drink plastic bottles is not effective due to lack of awareness on source separation, risky and inconsistent collection processes due to the fall on the selling price of collected plastic bottles, high cost of transporting plastic bottles, lack of safe and enough storage space, low community participation and low contribution of bottling companies to environmental protection. To solve these problems the researcher suggested consumer education, collector education and training, polluter pays, flattening of plastic bottles, preparing separate plastic bottle specific standards and policies and finally integration among all stake holders in order to protect the environment and create additional source of income in this area
