Abstract

Introduction: Measles is one of the leading causes of death among young children even though a safe and cost-effective vaccine is available. In 2011, there were 158 000 measles deaths globally – about 430 deaths every day or 18 deaths every hour. More than 95% of measles deaths occur in low-income countries with weak health infrastructures. Measles vaccination resulted in a 71% drop in measles deaths between 2000 and 2011 worldwide. On 8 November 2013, Aleta Chuko Woreda reported suspected measles outbreak; and team was deployed to investigate the outbreak. Methods: Reviewed of line lists from the Woreda Health Office; surveillance reports and records were reviewed. Defined cases based on national measles guideline. Besides, both descriptive and case control study designs were applied and data was analyzed using MS-Excel and EPI-INFO 7. Results: Totally 478 cases were reported from Aleta Chuko Woreda during the outbreak period. Close to 129(27 %) of the cases had conjunctivitis, 410(85.8 %) had cough; 61(12.7 %) of them had diarrhea. Two hundred four (53%) of the cases were Males. Cases were aged 3 month to 60 years old; with mean age of 9 years and median age of 8years. Ninety four (19.6 %) of the cases were under five, while 384(80.3 %) of them were five and above years old. Only 186 (38.9 %) of the cases had one dose vaccination history; while 262(54.8%) and30 (6.3 %) of the case were unvaccinated and did not known their status respectively. Conclusions: Age groups five and above year olds were highly affected. There was no outreach site and functional Cold chain system in the affected Kebeles of the Woreda. The protective effect of the vaccinations made so far were questionable. Low vaccination coverage, low community awareness and non-functional cold storage likely contributed to the outbreak.
