Abstract
This thesis examines the availability and effectiveness of support and protection mechanisms for women politicians in Addis Ababa. It explores the extent to which legal frameworks, political parties, and other stakeholders contribute to the support, protection, empowerment, and meaningful participation of women in Ethiopia’s political sphere, with a specific emphasis on the lived experience of women politicians in Addis Ababa. To achieve this, the study applies both doctrinal and non-doctrinal legal research methods. The doctrinal approach is used to analyze relevant national and international legal frameworks, while the non-doctrinal approach investigates practical realities through interviews with women politicians, political party representatives, CSOs, and government institutions. A purposive sampling method is used, and the data is analyzed qualitatively by comparing legal standards with real-life experiences. The findings reveal that although various stakeholders have introduced initiatives aimed at supporting and protecting women in politics, significant gaps remain. These gaps continued to hinder the promotion and safeguarding of women’s meaningful participation in the political arena
