| dc.description.abstract | Between November 2024 and June 2025, this study examined the species diversity and home garden management in the Horo Guduru Wollega Zone of Oromia, Western Ethiopia's Abay Chomen district. Situated between 37°10'-37°21'E and 9°34'-9°45'N. The tarea offered a useful environment for learning about conventional gardening techniques. Sixteen (16) home gardens were chosen at random, and information was acquired through questionnaires, ranking exercises, interviews, and conversations with knowledgeable local elders. 102 households in all took part. We found 100 distinct plant species in 41 families, including 34 trees, 20 shrubs, 7 lianas, and 39 herbs. Common trees include Acacia abyssinica, Ficus sur, and two varieties of eucalyptus. Popular herbs included Brassica oleracea (cabbage), Allium sativum (garlic), and Allium cepa (red onion). Alongside the liana Caesalpinia decapetala, shrubs such as Catha edulis and Rosmarinus officinalis were also extensively cultivated. The Fabaceae family is the most numerous, followed by the Asteraceae and Rosaceae families, according to the numbers of species listed under the representative families. Home garden plants were used to calculate the evenness and diversity index. Intercropping, or combining different species to produce good results in the smallest amount of space, was a common practice among householders. Plant diversity was impacted by problems like weeds, pests, small garden sizes, and water scarcity. The study mentions the need for local agricultural offices to provide more assistance to families so they can cultivate a greater range of plant species for local markets and also their own uses | |
