Abstract

Social media has been broadly utilized with high excitement among young youth around the world. In Ethiopia, a College student most of the time utilizing Social Media So was influence student’s personal. Hence, this study is planned to identify out the Social Media usage among Youth a study of students of Tegbareid Polytechnic College Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 148 respondents were selected as sample from the college and departments. Random sampling technique was employed for sample selection. Subsequently, the responses of 148 tegbaried polytechnic college students were collected and scored, coded and inserted into SPSS, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics analyzed using frequency tables, crosstabs, Pearson correlation and t-tests. The study confirmed that most of the respondents visit their social media sites using phones and spend between thirty minutes up to three hours per day. In addition the study revealed that the use of social media sites on the other hand had pressure to affect academic performance of the students negatively and that there was direct relationship between the use of social media sites and academic performance. Since the use of social media sites had affected the academic work of students negatively there is the urgent need for the introduction of students to the availability of reference books and other information resources or materials that can help them academically. The study recommends among others that, students with mobile phones having internet facility should be encouraged to use it to supplement their research in the library rather than the usual chatting with friends all the time. Students should be encouraged to limit the time they spend on their social media sites per day and advise them to rather substitute those hours to read reference books to improve academic performances. Instructors, trainers and students can use social media as teaching and learning tool to improve learning process.
