Abstract

The research has been done under the title “The role of supply chain management information system on humanitarian supply chain operations performance, The case of the United Nations World Food Programme, Ethiopia”. This research applies a quantitative method, descriptive statistics and regression model as the research methodology. Similarly, out of the total 134 World Food Programme Ethiopia employees taken as a population of the study, questionnaires were made available to 100 of those selected employees (program, logistics, and procurement unit) using a random sampling technique. Out of the total distributed questionnaires 72 responses were obtained with a response rate of 72%. Data obtained through questionnaire has been analyzed by using descriptive and regression model and related tests were used for data analysis using X&Y as independent variables and A&B as dependent variables. The analysis was supported by SPSS 23 software. The result of the analysis revealed that planning, sourcing, warehousing system were found to be significant, the research identified the current supply chain management information system practices that have an impact on overall supply chain management information systems performance of the World Food Programme namely; responsiveness, flexibility, reliability and cooperation/standardization. Empirical findings of the study showed that World Food Programme uses the required information systems to manage its planning, sourcing, logistics, and delivery and monitoring and evaluation. However, there is a lack of using some technologies like Global Positioning System (GPS)on the contracted truck and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) on aid items that can facilitate the virtual management of the whole systems. In addition to this, the World Food Programme should work more on the information systems to make it more accessible by any end-user (beneficiaries/implementing partner),and improve the flexibility of the systems to measure the satisfaction level of beneficiaries by implementing partners is also another suggestion. Moreover, improving the current warehouse system practices expected to further enhance the humanitarian supply chain operational performance. Finally, building a new system that can support the current logistics information system with the other systems makes the whole system more efficient and can narrow the gap between the donors and the aid recipients.
