Abstract
The purpose of the study was to describe the effect of fleet management practices on logistics performance in Defense Joint Logistics Main Department Transport Department (DJLMDTD) in Ethiopia.
The study adopted descriptive research design as well as both qualitative and quantitative research approach type used for interpreting the findings based on statistical data. Subsequently, Likert scale questionnaires were developed and distributed to 135 respondents who are the employees of DJLMDTD and semi structured interview also conducted for middle level and top-level managers. The researcher used stratified sampling technique. Descriptive statistics were calculated using Statistical package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 20.
Fleet management has become integral to the success of vehicle movement in institutions and must be a priority for organizations. Hence fleet management is a day-to-day activity in DJLMDTD which is not supported by mobile technology like GPS for some national security issues.
The study concluded that among fleet management practices vehicle repair and maintenance management have the largest effect on logistics performance, next is driver training management have effect on logistics performance, fuel management have negatively significant effect on logistics performance and vehicle schedule and routing have the least effect on logistics performance results mainly time delay, increase in operational cost and poor safety.
Based on the findings, the study recommended that the DJLMDTD is better to use a mobile technology like GPS which is useful in tracking the vehicles for a better efficiency and to adapt the fleet management practices effectively. There is also a need for regular driver training and apply the safety policies which are signed and enforced by upper management.
