The purpose of this thesis is to examine the factors that motivate private business companies in Ethiopia to participate and adopt the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), how they practiced CSR and what barriers do they see when they implement CSR. The empirical study was conducted using purposive qualitative method through in-depth interviews. The participants in this study were 19 which were taken from both multi- national companies and local owned companies, governmental Organizations, NGO and Private CSR practitioners to get diverse views about the issue. Many of the CSR related researches have been conducted on business and management areas and usually analyze the benefits of corporations than societal response. This research tried to give emphasis on the societal dimensions of CSR. The findings indicated that CSR contribute a lot in mitigating social problems in the country. Even if both local and MNC are actively engaged in social issues, Multi-national companies tend to be more to maximize profits and enhance competitiveness, whereas local companies tend in value-driven CSR (good and the right thing to do, to give something back to society).en_US
