Abstract
The research topic is Community Policing and Gender Based Violence: from a Social Work
Perspective, in Yeka Sub-City of Addis Ababa. Major objective of the research is to examine the
implementation of community policing and its applicability in addressing GBV, with a particular
focus on Woreda 01 & 02 of Yeka Sub-City , while the major research question was to assess
whether community policing approach is adequately addressing GBV in the study area . To this
end, the researcher employed qualitative method and exploratory research design to undertake
the study. The data was collected through in-depth interview, focus group discussion and key
informant interview while the secondary sources of information depended on desk review of
relevant documents. The study found out that community policing officers working in the study
area are not well versed with the theoretical and practical aspects of community policing and the
basics of GBV and its preventing approach. With these situations, the community policing
offices working in the area cannot prevent violence against women, girls and children as
expected from community policing philosophy. Thus, to reverse the situation, community
policing officers should pass through serious of trainings including the prevention aspects of
GBV. Furthermore, the training should give emphasis on both the theoretical and practical
aspects of community policing and the basic skills of social work and approaches
