Sexual Beliefs of Adolescent Boys and Girls in Woloatia Community

Abstract
Literatures indicate that adolescent boys and girls have different beliefs
about sex. The major purpose of this study was to investigate the pattern
of these differences and the possible gender and age difference.
Data were collected from second cycle and high school students who were
randomly selected from five Woredas. A total of 540 students were
considered as data sources from grade 7 to 12. Self- constructed
questionnaire was used to measure adolescents' sexual . belief on preerotic,
erotic and post-erotic sexual issues and their source of information
in forming sexual belief As regards data analysis, the meim scores of
adolescent boys and girls on sexual belief and its source were compared.
More specifically, important sexual elements such as love, dating, virginity,
sexual intercourse, masturbation, unwanted pregnancy and sexually
transmitted disease observed'on gender and age trends.
In the study, the extent of conservativeness on sexual lssues compared
among three age groups and two sexes. Significant differences were
observed in their sexual belief especially on dating, virginity, sexual
intercourse, masturbation, and unwanted pregnancy. Significant difference
also was seen in the three age groups on some sexual issues like sexual
intercourse, STDs, virginity. After conclusion important recommendations
were made, such as including sex education sufficiently in the curriculum
so as to provide sexual information evenly for different age and sex
groups.
