Abstract
Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) is an in-service training program adapted from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program. The program is designed to assist the Ministry of Health in building or strengthening health systems by producing public health professionals with skills and competencies developed through applied learning. FETP consists of 25% class-based learning and 75% at a field base where residents are expected to apply the principles learned in class to solve real world public health issues. It is different than traditional MPH program that has a didactic portion followed by a thesis project. Ethiopia adapted the Field Epidemiology Training Program to strengthen the Ethiopian Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM). The EFETP provides residents a Master of Public Health degree in Field Epidemiology after they complete two years of supervised work in applied or field epidemiology. The EFETP residents spent 2 years in a field epidemiology training program focused on investigating outbreaks, analysis and evaluation of surveillance systems, and other public health activities and residents compile a body of works consisting of their outbreak investigation reports, surveillance analyses, etc. This compiled body of works has nine main sections or chapters which under taken during the residency time of the program. The first eight sections are expected outputs during the residency time; outbreak investigation, surveillance data analysis, evaluation of the surveillance system, health profile report, writing of finalized scientific manuscript for peer review journals, abstracts submitted to scientific conferences, writing protocol/proposal of epidemiologic research project , narrative summary of laboratory activities , summary of disaster situation visited/risk assessment and other additional works are included.
The outputs of the two years field residency are presented in a summarized way. In the outbreak investigations chapter or section three outbreaks were investigated. These were measles outbreak in Dembia District, January/2014, Cutaneous leishmaniasis outbreak in Ankesha District, October/2013 and cutaneous anthrax outbreak in Waghmira Zone February/2013. The health profile description and Surveillance system evaluation were done in
