dc.description.abstract | This study examined climate change-related news coverage in two widely circulated private Amharic newspapers, Addis Admas and the Reporter, published in 20 13. A framing approach established by Benford and Snow (2000), and later adapted by Yun,Ku, Park and Han (2012:201 ) and specifically designed to apply to climate change issues laid the groundwork for the investigation. A quantitative content analysis was conducted to determine the coverage, story frames, dominant themes and sources portrayed in the news coverage; and semi- structured interviews were held with edito rs of the twu newspapers to further explore how stories are se lected and prioritized for the newspapers. Results revealed that the most conUllon frames in the newspapers are the "prognostic" frame, which focuses on the means of responding to climate change and the "After-effect" fi'ame, which focuses on the results of implementing climate change countermeasures. On the other hand, the dominant themes frequently discussed are the "conservation" theme focu sing on conservation of natural resources and the "mitigation" theme focu sing on mitigation of climate change. Politicians and civil society organizations were more likely represented in story frames making judgments and suggesting so lutions-there were limited voices from the academics and the continuities. | en_US |
