Abstract
Concrete shell roofs have been widely used in the construction field for reasons
concerning aesthetic appearance or achieving an economical design of a building with
large spans. This paper deals with the influence of aspect ratio and height to miner radius
on the structural forces and the moments developed on the surface of elliptical shell
roofs. The parameters considered in this study are major to miner radius ratio and height
to miner radius ratio of elliptical shell roof. This thesis studies the parametric influences
of aspect ratio and height to miner radius ratio on elliptical shell roofs. The influences of
aspect ratio and height to miner radius should be considered in the analysis and design of
the elliptical shell roof using both membrane and bending theory analysis. The structural
forces and the moments developed in elliptical shell roof are predicted using
mathematical method and the model proposed by ANSYS software.
As the height ratio increases, the in-plane forces linearly increase while the moment
forces decrease in a quadratic fashion. Therefore, it is noted that the aspect and height
ratios greatly affect the moment and in-plane forces, respectively.
