Abstract

Media Framing on Peace Agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea: Content Analysis of EBC and FBC News Stories from (June 26 to July 18, 2018) Tekelmicheal Alemu Addis Ababa University, 2019 The main objective of the study was to investigate the dominant frames used in EBC and FBC news stories regarding the peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea from June 26, 2018 to July 18, 2018. The study employed a qualitative content analysis method: textual analysis. To conduct the study, all news stories regarding the peace agreement and events related to the peace agreement in EBC and FBC, the major broadcast corporation, were purposely taken and analyzed. In addition to the textual analysis of the data obtained through the news stories, the study analyzed the in depth interview of senior editors of EBC and FBC. The study found out that both media employed four standard frames in the news stories during the time frame of the study. Prognostic frame, human interest frame, attribute of responsibility and economic consequence frames were intensively employed in the news stories during the time of the study. Prognostic (solution) frame and human interest frames were largely used in the news stories during the time frame of the study. Having employed these frames in the news stories, the media conveyed certain themes or meanings. Themes like unity, peace, two nations: one people are some of the messages the media aimed to transfer for the audience. To emphasize the use of the frames, the journalists and editors team used symbols, images and captions with various news stories.
