Consistency of Parenting Styles Employed by Mothers and Fathers in Intact Households: The case of Grade Eight students at Safari Academy

| dc.description.abstract | This study was conducted to investigate the consistency of parenting styles employed by mothers and fathers in intact households. The objective of this study was to examine how consistent are paternal and maternal parenting styles and how parenting styles of parents differ due to the sex of the child. The study used a purposive sampling to select the school and using systematic sampling technics to total of 197 student who s were selected for the study. Quantitative data have been collected by using structured questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed by using SPSS version 20 and presented in descriptive statistics, tabularization and chi-square. Accordingly, finding revealed that 62% of respondents perceived their parents as consistent parent in their parenting styles. Among these consistent parents, 39.6% of respondent’s families practice Authoritative parenting styles followed by Indulgent, Authoritarian and Neglectful 29.3%, 21.3% and 10.7% respectively. The dominant parenting styles practiced by fathers happen to be Neglectful parenting style whereas the highest number of mothers perceived asAuthoritative parent. No statistical significant difference in the score between paternal parenting styles and sex of the child (x 2 =2.978, df= 3, P>.005) and No statistical significant difference in the score between Maternal parenting styles and sex of the child (x 2 =4.531, df=3, P>.005) which implies, parenting styles of mothers and fathers does not vary on account to sex of the child. | en_US |
