Abstract
A glassy carbon electrode was modified with bromocresol purple (BCP) and characterized for
the electrochemical oxidation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by cyclic voltammetry and differential
pulse voltammetry. The oxidation peak current of 4-NP at the modified electrode was increased
(compared to the bare GCE), thus indicating that the BCP exhibits a remarkable enhancement
effect on the electrochemical oxidation of 4-NP. The effects of loading with BCP, pH value and
scan rate were examined. The oxidation peak current of 4-NP is proportional to its
concentration in the range of 4.0 μM to 100 μM, with a correlation coefficient of 0.984. The
detection limit is 2.8 μM. The method is simple, selective and sensitive. It was successfully
applied for the determination of 4-NP in water samples, with recoveries ranging from 100% to
101%.
