Abstract
The land degradation is one of the major challenges in agricultural production in many part of the world especially in developing countries like Ethiopia. Even though SWC is one of the practical ways to reverse the threat and hence a number of SWC methods were introduced to combat land degradation the level of using in a sustainable manner and adoption practice is remains below expectation. The purpose of the study was aimed to investigate the determinants of continued use of soil and water conservation measures in Kuyyu District, Oromia region, Ethiopia. The study was based on primary data collected from 339 samples selected at random using a household survey questionnaire from two PAS. Additional information was also obtained from focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and personal observation. The data has been analyzed by descriptive statistics and econometric model (Binary logit and tobit regression) using STATA software.. When determinants of continue use of SWC measure were analyzed and testing using descriptive statistics the statistical level of T-value and chi-square, mean, standard deviation and percentage types were applied. The descriptive analysis pointed out that of total 339 samples HHs randomly selected 250 were maintained the SWC practices while 89 were either removed or not maintained regularly. The result from binary logit regression confirmed that educational level, slope, degree of erosion, year of plot management, off-farm activity, access to credit, age. Marital status, family size and agricultural extension contact found to be significant and except family size and age all are affected positively farmers’ decision to use and maintain soil conservation technologies. In similar way the tobit regression analysis revealed that among sixteen explanatory variable fourteen of them were found to be significant on decision to maintain the selected three types of SWC measures namely soil bund, stone bund and hill side terrace. The analysis of the households’ attitude indicated that that majority have positive view regarding SWC technologies so that enabled them to maintain regularly while attitudes that undermine the severity of soil erosion were found to be challenges for most of the respondents. Like other significant explanatory variables the high extension visit and low level age respondents were more likely decide to maintain the SWC technologies. The recommendation is suggested to apply proper strategy, prefer to conserve fertile soil type before degraded, minimize implementation failures, promoting access to credit, education and innovation, participatory approach, agricultural extension contact, improved livestock management and appropriate technology
