The Effect of Urban Development Activities in Avian Species Diversity, the Case of Condominium Housings in Gerji and Bole Bulbula, Addis Ababa

| dc.description.abstract | When natural habitats get replaced by human dominant activities as a result of urbanization, it leads to species extinction, migration or biotic homogenization. So, it affects bird community structure and composition and increases or decreases species abundance and species richness. The main objective of this study was to assess the diversity and abundance of birds from two study sites in Bole Bulbula and Gerji condominium sites at Addis Ababa City administration. Data were collected using the point count method within 25m radius plots and visited each site two times per month. During this study, a total of 439 birds belonging to 21 species, 12 families and 4 orders were recorded. From the 21 identified species of birds, 64.52% of the species were recorded from flowering trees and small bushes habitats, while 32.25% and 3,23% species were recorded from birds seat on power cable and open sewage habitats, respectively. Order Passeriformes was numerically the dominant order represented with 15 species from the 21 identified species which accounts 74.94% of the identified species. Passer Swainsonii, Ploceus baglafecht and Uraeginthus begngalus were the most dominant species observed. Bulbula condominium site had higher value of species diversity (H’=2.539) than Gerji condominium site (H’=2.147). Whereas, regarding to species evenness index Gerji condominium in dry season (E’=0.67) and wet season (E’= 0.62) had higher value than Bulbula condominium site in dry season (E’=0.61) and wet season (E’= 0.55). This is may be due to the effect of urbanization on bird species and the factors that govern richness and abundance, more studies are required to make a complete list of available bird species. | en_US |
