Abstract

Background: Among the recognized increasing public health issues in growing nations is diabetes mellitus. Undiagnosed Diabetes Mellitus imposes significant consequences because patients are left untreated and face potential difficulties. Objective: To assess the prevalence of undiagnosed Diabetes Mellitus and associated risk factors among adults in Arba Minch City, southern Ethiopia. Materials and method: In this study, a community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 484 individuals in Arba Minch city Gamo zone, Southern Ethiopia from July 8, 2023, to Dec 9, 2024. A standardized questionnaire was administered through a trained interviewer- to gather sociodemographic data and followed collections of anthropometric measurements from each study participant. Early morning (following 8 hours or more of fasting) blood samples were collected to measure the fasting blood glucose (FBG) level. FBS was determined by enzymatic method (glucose oxidase and ferricyanide) using VivaChek TM Ino Blood Glucometer. To determine the predictors of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus, a multivariable logistic regression model was built. The strength of relationships was evaluated by calculating the 95% confidence interval (CI) for the adjusted odds ratio (AOR). Result: The overall prevalence of undiagnosed DM in the study was 52(11.4% 95% CI: 8.6 14.7%).Though not statistically significant undiagnosed DM was higher in males (15.9% vs. 6.7%, P>0.05). Increased occurrence of undiagnosed DM was observed with increasing age but again not statistically significant (P>0.05). Multivariate analysis of logistic regression showed undiagnosed DM was highly associated. Conclusion and recommendation : In general higher percentage of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus was noted in the current study and this call to strengthen the findings further large-scale study is recommended. Programs for urban health extension will focus on helping households adopt healthy eating and exercise habits that can lead to weight loss.
