Efficient utilization of agricultural residue is the need of today‘s environment to optimize the production cost of materials with the same nature and use. Teff Straw is one of such an agricultural residue which is available in high amount in Ethiopia but didn‘t get that much attention. Some researchers have indicated that Brown Teff Straw Ash contains high silica which is a potential agent for pozzolanic reaction. In the present study, heat treatment has been used to extract Teff Straw Ash for the partial replacement of cement. This paper aims to enhance the compressive strength of cement mortar by partially replacing the cement with amorphous Teff Straw Ash. Experiments were conducted for replacement ratios of 10% and 20% by volume of cement. Teff Straw Ash (TSA) used for this study is prepared at Material Engineering Laboratory of Addis Ababa Universsity Institute of Technology using muffle furnace at combustion temperatures of 600oC, 750oC and 900oC. Psychical and chemical analysis tests, such as: XRD, SEM and complete silicate analysis are performed, in this research, to investigate the properties of Teff Straw Ash (TSA). The results of the mortar cubes have shown that, up to 10% replacement of the ordinary Portland cement by Brown Teff Straw Ash (BTSA) achieved a higher compressive strength at combustion temperature of 600oC, whereas the 20% replacement has shown a lower strength as compared to the control specimen made of cement mortar.en_US
