Peritonitis is defined as irritation and inflammation of the peritoneum covering the abdominal wall. This usually occurs due to microbial contamination of the peritoneum. Etiologically it is further classified as primary, secondary, and potentially tertiary. The diagnosis of generalized peritonitis is mainly clinical. Patients can also present late with signs and symptoms of organ failure. Surgery is the sole and effective measure to manage patients with secondary generalized peritonitis
