Abstract
Land banks are governmental organization that are established for the purpose of converting
vacant, abandoned and foreclosed properties into useful factor of production. Land banking was
officially established in Addis Ababa city in 2009/2010 under the urban development, banking
and urban renewal project office of Addis Ababa city. The land banking practice has been facing
a number of challenges since its establishment. This study was undertaking with the main
objective of identifying the main challenges of land banking practice in kolfe keranyo sub city of
Addis Ababa city. Stratified random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were used to
get appropriate data and address the main objective of the study. The study has found out that
the main challenges of land banking in kolfe keranyo sub city in particular and Addis Ababa city
in general include poor organizational structure, lack of modern land information system, weak
financial sources, lack of skilled manpower and weak urban governance system. Since land
banking has lots of advantages of economic development of the sub city and has good future
development, the government of Ethiopia has to give special attention for the promotion of land
banking and effective use of land resources in order to address the future need of urban land for
various development activities and achieve governmental plans of the country.
