| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the study was to investigate conflict and its management in Gunchire and Mike high schools. Data were collected from 5 officials, 10 administrative staff, 50 teachers and 140 selected students. The participants responded to questions on the cause, their perception on function~ of conflict, their preference of interpersonal conflict management styles, and strategies used by the schools to manage disputes and disagreements. Respondents were asked to complete an established questionnaire on the issues raised. A semi-structured interview was also held with school directors, supervisor and the chairpersons of disciplinary committees. The responses collected were systematically analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. One way ANOV A and Post Hoc tests were also employed to examine the signifi cance difference in the use of interpersonal conflict management styles (avoiding, competing, collaborating, compromising and accommodating). The results confirmed that disciplinary problems ranked as a major cause of conflict in the school s. The study also revealed that the majority of them perceive conflict as negati ve that must be avoided i'ather than managing it to benefit. A statically significant di fference was observed on the choice of styles among the three groups- administrative staff, teachers and students. The multiple comparison tests confirmed a significant difference between teachers and students on the use of the five styles. The study also portrayed that teachers and administrative staff significantly differ only in competing. | en_US |
