| dc.description.abstract | Studies regarding older persons is extremely scarce in Ethiopia, therefo re, research has to be conducted wi th the survey of the socio-economic situation of older persons in Ethiopia being the first one to be addressed The overall objective of the study was to explore the impact of care and suppo11 services on socio-economic aspects of older persons in Kibre Aregawyan Migbare Senay Dirijit (KAMSD). Out of the eight older persons that participated in this stud y, four were receiving institution based care while the other four were involved in income generating activities particularly a flourmill set up by KAMSD. Qualitative data was gathered using semistmctured interviews and observation. The findings revealed that the problems older persons faced before joining the organization included lack of shelter, no source of income, shortage of food , poor access to health care services, and lack of suppo11 £i'om relatives. The study showed that as a result of being a beneficiary in the organization, older persons were able to have a shelter where they were given food and had access to health care; they received trainings and were involved in income generating activities allowing them to have a source of income. h nihe1l110re the study also indicated that older persons are not simply recipients of care; they have the des ire to be active and contribute in whatever way they can.
