Seroprevalence of Brucellosis in Small Ruminants and Humans in Amigna District Selected Peasant Association, Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia

Abstract
A cross sectional study was undertaken in selected five peasant associations found in South
East Ethiopia. Amigna district, Arssi Zone, from October 2010 to March 2011 to determine
the seroprevalence of Brucellosis in small ruminants and human risk groups (farmers). Sera
samples were collected from 100 households and 700 small ruminants (350 goats, 350
sheep). The sampling include small ruminants above 6 month of age and human risk group
who had close contact with small ruminants, visited the district's Health Center and had
suspected on brucellosis. The sera samples were screened using modified Rose Bengal test
(MBRPT), and there was no detection of anti brucella antibodies in 700 animal and 100
human blood samples. During the questionnaire survey, it was found that 28% replace the
stock with own stock, 22% from village stock, 50% from both stock. Among the total
households 73 owners (73%) used unsafe methods to disposal fetal membrane, whereas 27
(27%) applied safe disposal of fetal membrane. Although antibodies were not detected in sera
of animals and humans in the area, there is a human practice favorable for the transmission of
the disease from animals to humans. In line with these results, there should be strict
regulation in preventing introduction of brucellosis to the area; and humans should avoid
practicing risky activities so that transmission of the disease to humans will be prevented
