Abstract
Introduction: Labor companionship refers to support provided to a woman during labor and childbirth. It is a key component of providing respectful maternity care, despite its benefit, there is few study about the status of birth companionship. The study aimed to assess labor companion and its associated factors Tikur anbesa specialized hospital, and Zewditu Memorial Specialized Hospital
Methods: A health facility-based cross-sectional study design carried from April to May 2023 In at Tikur Anbessa Specialize Hospital (TASH) and Zewditu Memorial Specialized Hospital (ZMH) data entered and analyzed with Epi-data version 4.60 and SPSS version 25.0. Bivariable regression done and variables with p-value ≤ 0.25 analyzed with multivariable logistic regression. Variables with p-value ≤ 0.05 significantly associated with labor companionship. Hosmer–Lemeshow goodness of fit checked and all multi-collinearity of variables with variance inflation factors (VIF) up to 10 tolerated
Result: A total of 400 participants were involved in the study with a 100 % response rate. The combined overall prevalence of utilization of companionship during labor among women who gave birth at TASH and ZMH is 52.2 %, 95% CI [47.2, 57.2]. And the prevalence of utilization of companionship after delivery is 95.0 %, 95% CI [92.4, 96.9]. The individual institution prevalence of utilization of companionship during labor among women who gave birth at TASH and ZMH is 15.5 %, 95% CI [10.8, 21.3]. And 89 %, 95% CI [83.8, 93.0] respectively. Prevalence of utilization of companionship after delivery among women who gave birth at TASH and ZMH is 93.5 %, 95% CI [89.1, 96.5]. And 96.5%, 95% CI [92.9, 98.6] respectively By the combined analysis, occupation (AOR 2.930 (1.269,6.768), Average monthly household income (AOR 0.469(0.221,0.995) , obstetric complication during the current pregnancy (AOR 0.577(0.346,0.961) , patient previous awareness about companionship (AOR 1.744(1.011,3.008), comfortability of the facility to have companionship (AOR 6.232(3.520,11.034), participant desire to have companionship (AOR 5.416(1.360,21.571) were significantly associated with labor companion utilization At TASH, having comfortability of facility (AOR 2.225 (0.911, 5.437) were significantly associated with labor companion utilization. At ZMH, Obstetric complication in the current pregnancy (AOR 0.305 (0.102, 0.913) were significantly associated with labor companion utilization Keywords: labor companions
