Abstract
Planning and scheduling process is a major phase of project life cyle. And when the process is embedded in an operation which is costy and time sensitive, like in aircraft heavy maintenance projects, the criticality of the process intensifies. This study examines the practice of Ethiopian Airline which is a giant and the only industry in Ethiopia as Approved Maintenance Organization. The focal of the study is on ET-MRO (Ethiopian Mainteanance and Over haul) specifically on the organizational units that are responsible and are in direct engagement with maintenance planning and scheduling processes. The conceptual frame work used in guiding the study is formulated by contemplating the factors that affect planning and scheduling of maintenance program. And it is presented at the end of the literature review. The study is purely qualitative in its methods & design and the ontological perspective of the study has been clearly stated in the methodology chapter.In-depth interview, focus group discussion and document review are the methods for source of data. Subsequently methodological triangulation is implemented in testing the validity and reliability of the data. The imposition of the flight operator on the planning and scheduling process due to downtime of aircrfts during maintenance, the lack of benchmarks for work processes, lack of clear work description among organization units, low involvement of the project manager in the planning and scheduling process are the issues identified in the study.
