dc.description.abstract	This thesis on the ryortrya1 o f society and the concept of modernization as reflcctec in Abbe Gobegna’s novels has four divisions. The introductory deals with the purpose and mothed the tudy. It also includes brief biography the author The second and third chapters contain the major portion 0f the study. The church and the People, aAdministration and Litigation, education and itntellingenteial and moral Degeneration are the four aspect of Abbes portrayal of society presented in chapter two. The third chnpter shows the autor's concept of modernizing Ethiopia . In the part attention is paid to the kind of society system favoured educational. and religious reformed and economical progress • The concluding chapter summarizeses the main points that are discussed• in the .nain parts of the study and evaluates Abbe ' s conceots.
