Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between facebook usage and students’ academic performance in Beshale Secondary and Preparatory School of Bole sub city. The data were collected from randomly selected three hundred fifty three students through self-reported questionnaire. The analysis was done by using SPSS version 20. This study used descriptive statistics, Independent t-test, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation to analyze the collected data. The finding of this study revealed that male students were relatively more users of facebook than female students and the age ranges between 18 -21 were more in using facebook than 14 -17 years old. Findings also show that majority of secondary and preparatory students used facebook for the purpose of entertainment, chatting with friends, making new friendships respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in scores of facebook usage between males and females students and also no statistically significant difference in scores of facebook usage among the age of 14 – 17and 18 -21 years. There was moderately negative relationship between facebook usage and academic performance of students. There was a statistically significant difference in academic performance scores for users and non users. Finally, there was a statistically significance difference between the low, moderate and high level of facebook users. To concludes that the usage of Facebook among student has negative effect to the academic performance on the students of the Beshale secondary and preparatory school. To this end, the researcher recommends that teachers and parents should work cooperatively together for the benefit of all students regarding safe social media use like facebook
