Abstract

TItis study attempted to identify the detemlinants of seeking trcatment during illness and the demand for health care services among different providers in Bllre Town.TIle factors that are expected to have an influential impact were categoIized as individual amVor household specific vatiables and choice specific vatiables. The data used to estimate the effects of identified vatiablcs on the specified models were collected tlu'ough a field sUlvey on 400 households of tile residents in Bure Town between February 16'h to March 6°', 1999. A systematic random sampling metl\Od was designed and used for purposes of data collection in the assU\l1ption of homogeneity in tile population. The estimated empmcal model results showed til at individual and/or household specific variables such as sex of the patient, seveIity of illness, monlhly income of tile household and household size' and the choice specific vaIiable, dislance 10 reach tile nearest health facility, were found to have a significant effect on wheOler or not treatment was sought, but not on tile choice of provider of healtll care services. On the other hand, age of Ole patient, sex of the household head and education level of tile patient fi'om tile individual and/or household specific variables and quality valiables, medical cost of treatment per visit and waiting time for treatment from the choice specific category were found to have their own strong influence on the choicc of providers of heal til care services witll wlexpected result that waiting time for treatment played in the choice of public facilities and the medical cost of treatment per visit played in the choice of pIivate facilities which warrant us to perform furt1ler research in tltis area. TIle policy implication of such findings is discussed.
