dc.description.abstract | The main objective of this study is identifying the deleml.! n ~l!ts o ~ cr i l~l ir.a!ity l~ rollgh studyi ng the personal and socioeconomic charucterisucs of the offenders whose cases were decided by the higher courts of Oromiya. To meet th is obj ecti ve, the combined two- swgc sampling procedure and the method of logist ic regression are used to analyse the data. Information on age, sex, marital status, level of education, occupation, mental sani ty/stability, place of residence, zone of residence and economic status of the offenders were considered for a random sample of 967 indi viduals accused of committing crimes at different times before 1997/98 and dec ided as criminals and non-criminals in 1997/98. DifTerent models have been built for all types of crimes and all the selected lones, for each of the two strata, and for difTercnt groups of crimes. When all the cases arc considered toget her the most important determinants of criminality are found to be age, economic status and zone differe nce. In this study criminality is found to be negatively related to ' poverty ' which is against the theories and empirical studies on the causes of crime. | en_US |
