Abstract
Solid waste is any discarded material, trash, refuse, or garbage. It can be categorized by where it comes from, such as municipal wastes, industrial wastes, commercial wastes, construction and demolishing debris, biomedical wastes. Solid waste is a complex mixture of different substances, some of which are intrinsically hazardous to health and human activities. High rate population levels, booming economy, rapid urbanization and the rise in community living standards have greatly accelerated the solid waste generation rate in developing countries. The main objective of this study was to assess solid waste disposal management and its impact on public health in Woreda 04 of the Akaki Kality Sub-City in Addis Ababa. The research design was descriptive in nature and the quantitative method supported by qualitative approach. Data was generated via questionnaire, interview, field observation and document analysis.
Among the 220 sample respondents 93.2% of them filled out the questionnaire 10 respondents were participated and included in this section for analysis. The data obtained through questionnaire, were analyzed using statistical package for social sciences /SPSS/ and presented using tools such as frequency, count and percentage. On the other hand the data obtained through interview, observation and document analysis were analyzed qualitatively to substantiate the result of the quantitative analysis. The findings of the study showed that a 55.12% of the respondents were relatively qualified in the position they hold currently. The findings also indicated that there was a high level of need to conduct close supervision, monitoring and serious evaluation. Besides these, the resource provision and management, collaboration with stakeholders were weak. Capacity building, lack of stakeholder involvement, infrastructural issues were the major problems of the solid waste disposal management works. Realizing the fact to the great mismatch between the demand for and the supply to the proper solid waste disposal, introducing alternative ways of solid waste disposal approach was unquestionable. Moreover, the solid waste disposal policy of the government should consider multi directional approaches. Such as: Participative planning and implementing campaign that build up understanding and cooperation between the concerned stakeholders are very important. Maintain proper monitoring and evaluation systems and take as early corrective actions for a variation from the bench mark, Applying alternative low cost durable local materials and technology and encouraging different actors involved in the solid waste disposal undertakings are indispensable to address the targets of Woreda 04 of the Akaki-Kality Sub-City to become a clean and sustainable Woreda.
