Abstract

':!he ;:m:pose of this study is to find out the actual listening ability of the junior secondaJ:y school studentsin catparison with tIle listening level required of them in understandinq- their subject areas. A governr:ent jilllior secondary school vms selected for the study. From this school one grade seven section was selectee!. Grade seven teachers Ioho teach key subjects were recorded while teadling. '!he recorded material served as a basis for ti1e listening ability test. '!he results sho;"eC! that the actual lis :ming ability of the students was below the level expected of them by their teachers. '!hey were ~ in: a) Understanding the general information, b) Understanding instructions, c) Transferring information, and d) Understa.'1ding the specific functions bf language . Ho\~ver, they I-.Orked ~ll in sorre ~ific lanrmaqe f illlctions, discriiTIination of sounds, and 'yes/no' r;uestions Ccl t.l1e basis of the findinqs, it was reccrnrended that Enol 511 and other subject teachers need traini.'1g in classr= language if English is to continue as a r:ediun of instruction.
