Abstract

Introduction:-Ethiopian Somali Regional Health Bureau was notified by Godey Hospital about an outbreak of unknown acute febrile illness in Godey Town of Shebelle Zone. The illness was characterised by acute onset of high grade fever, chills, headache, and muscle pain. Local health office could not identify the causative agent. Regional health Bureau had sent team to investigate and respond the outbreak and respond. The investigation was conducted to verify the outbreak, identify the etiologic agent, risk factors and recommend control and prevention measures. Method:-Unmatched case control study supported by descriptive study was used. The investigation carried out from May 20 to July 5, 2015. Line listing all cases was done. We interviewed 34 cases and compared with 68 controls using structured questionnaire. Cases were from hospital and controls were patients admitted in hospital with other medical problem. Eleven serum blood specimens collected and sent to EPHI for investigation of viral infection. Data were entered and analyzed using EPI-Info 7 version 3.2.2. Bi-variate analysis and multi variate analyses were done. Result:-From May 05 to July 25, 2015 a total of 168 AFI cases with no death were reported in health facilities of Godey Town. The crude attack rate was 22.4 per 10,000. The attack rate in male (24/10,000) was higher than female (20/10,000). Age group 15-44 were highly affected (34.4/10, 000) followed by >45(23.4/10000). Out of 11 serums specimen sent to EPHI, 7 (63%) positive for dengue fever IgM by ELIZA. Many larvae were observed in many of the households visited in Kebeles 01 and 02. In multivariate analyse being sprayed their home were (AOR=0.3; 95%CI: 0.17(0.04-0.6) and using of mosquito repellent (AOR=0.15; 95%CI: (0.05-0.6) shown protective significant association while presence of sick person at home ((AOR=7.3; 95%CI: (2.9-40) shown and Presence of stagnant water around living area (AOR=3.9; 95% (1.03-14) shown negative association towards the occurrence of Dengue Fever. Conclusion:-Based on laboratory results, cases fulfil definition standard case definition and the vector identified in the assessed households, the causative agent of the outbreak was Dengue Fever Virus. To interrupt the transmission we recommend house hold spray, using mosquito repellent, strengthen social mobilization and dissemination of Dengue fever Key messages.Key word: Dengue fever: Godey Town
