Abstract

Solid waste management is the science of managing (controlling) the generation, storage, collection, transportation, resource-recovery, recycling and disposal of solid wastes generated from a residence in a way of addressing public health, conservation and environmental concerns. Although there are a variety of mechanisms of solid waste management, it is still poor as a result of many determinants in urban areas of Ethiopia particularly in Addis Ababa. This study tried to investigate the household solid waste management practices in Lideta sub-city by using the case study of two purposely selected woredas. Descriptive research design was employed with both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The data required for the study was collected from 380 household respondents systematically selected from woreda 5and 7 of Lideta sub-city. The quantitative and qualitative data were collected through structured questionnaires, face to face interview with key informants and field observation respectively. Binary logistic regression model was employed to estimate the effects of factors affecting on household solid waste segregation. Among the total household respondents, 40% (152) were households who practice solid waste segregation, while 60% (228) were those who didn’t practice solid waste segregation at household level. The result revealed that household head’s level of education, training access and monthly income were statistically significant (P<0.01) and found to have a positive effect on household solid waste segregation. On the contrary, age of household, marital status, housing ownership (kebele rental house & private rented house), household size, household heads job (private business), and monthly payment for disposal were statistically significant and found to have a negative effect on household solid waste segregation. Therefore the result of the study suggested that improving education level of the community, enhancing economic status of households, strategies targeted on awareness creation regarding household solid waste segregation at the source and the effective strategies of solid waste management (reduce, reuse and recycle)should be taken into account by the government, the cleansing management agency and other stakeholders.
