Abstract
Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multi-system connective tissue disorder
characterized by the presence of multiple antibodies directed against components of cell nuclei driven by
defective clearance of antigens through apoptosis.(1,2) Even though the exact etiology and pathogenesis
of SLE is not clearly understood, the clinical manifestations are either directly or indirectly mediated by
antibody formation and the creation of immune complexes (IC). The characteristics of the antibody, such
as, quantity, its binding site, affinity, charge, and ability to activate complement or other mediators of
inflammation. In the glomerulus, for example, the binding sites of different antibodies on the glomerular
capillary wall lead to different manifestations.(3,4)
Objective: The objective of this study is to describe the characteristics and poor prognostic factors in
SLE patients admitted to Tikur Anbesa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Method: This will be a retrospective study of all patients with SLE admitted to the department of
internal medicine at Tikur Anbessa Hospital, in Ethiopia during a 2-year period between October 2021
and December 2023.
Result: The findings of the study will be summarized and presented in percentage, tables and figures.
Conclusion: Finally, the finding will be concluded with main finding.
Funding Sources: College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University. A total of 25, 000 ETH BIRR is
allocated and the research will be finalized by the end of November 2023.
