Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the cold chain management practice and identify the major challenges related to cold chain management at National Blood Bank Service, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Cross-sectional study was used to assess the cold chain management and its related challenges at the facility. Based on the finding of the study, on availability of cold chain equipment, almost two third (71.7%) of the study participants responded that there is an adequate cold chain equipment at National Blood Bank Service. Technical capacity was also assessed and the study result revealed that more than half of the participants (52.8%) responded that personnel are technically capable of practicing cold chain management at the facility. The finding also revealed that cold chain management practice was poor as reported by majority 66.9% of the respondents. As compared to the other challenges the study result showed that challenges related to power supply was the first major challenge followed by maintenance problems and transportation related challenges respectively. Overall from the finding of the study it can be concluded that there is an adequate availability of cold chain equipment and a greater number of technically capable personnel responsible for cold chain management practice. But there is a poor cold chain management practices at National Blood Bank Service. In addition all the major challenges were observed that are related to cold chain management practice which affects the overall operation of National Blood Bank Service.
