Good intentions, substantial sums of money, and tremendous work are the foundation of many project initiations. Most of them, however, are not very successful. Lack of understanding or definition of the project and product scope at the outset of the project plays a significant role in projects' failure. Delivering a high-quality product to the stakeholders within the allotted time frame and budget is the result of a properly defined and managed scope. Even though the requirement to complete a project successfully is well understood, surprisingly little information has been published regarding the importance of scope. This research paper examines the need for adequate scope definition and management, as well as the main causes of scope management problems and solutions. The research is of both qualitative and quantitative type and has used interviews and questionnaires for primary data collection and reviewed various publications for secondary data. Upon analysing the data, it was found that the project’s scoping efforts have not been performed to the expected levels and in turn, the project’s performance has been limited to only a moderate level. The major factors that have been affecting the project’s scoping efforts have been found to be lack of stakeholder engagement leading to various scope change requests, lack of effective and clear scope change management tools to avoid high resource wastage during change of scope and lack of skilled workforce who can take accountability to implement the project with in the boundary set at the start. To improve the current performance of the project in the proceeding phases, the researcher suggested that improved stakeholder management should receive great attention along with better internal and external communication strategies. Additionally, use of project management tools and high-level trainings to project team should also be considered for a successful project implementation
