Abstract

The study has investigated the slaughterhouse waste management and its environmental impacts in Modjo town on two export abattoirs. The abattoirs conducted for this study were Akseker Ethiopia Casing Plc. and Halal Food Industries Plc. The objective of the study was to assess the waste management practices and to identify the slaughterhouse waste associated in pacts in both studied abattoirs. To carry out the study Descriptive research design has conducted.90 sample sizes has been used for head household survey. Though; qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques have been used; while primary and secondary data sources were used for the study. The study scope has covered three consecutive years which has from (2018-2020). According to the study result data indicated in the range of study period both abattoirs has produced estimated 4,902.87 ton solid waste and effluent wastes such as 14,629.64m3waste water and 1,469.22 ton of blood. Similarly; as the findings specified the slaughterhouse waste management practices implemented in both abattoirs were relevant but they are vary in the rendering and biogas production approaches that only implemented in Akseker Ethiopia Casing Plc. abattoir. Whereas the composting, treatment, reuse, burying and landfill, incineration management practices has been employed in both abattoirs. On the other hand according to the study result regarding the environmental and public health impacts that linked with slaughterhouse wastes the perception of the surrounding communities respondents indicated that about 57.4%, 32.3 % and 27.7% of the respondents agreed as the community in the area was suffering with the prevalence of difficulty in breathing/respiratory diseases due to (bad odour), social unrest (disturbance) and coughing diseases respectively. Particularly as identified from the collected data and the observation the complaint was being Akseker Ethiopia Casing Plc. abattoir because of rendering plant operation to process bone and blood meal that polluting the environment. To conclude; these study was conducted on export abattoirs that they are on their ways of understanding and giving due considerations for economic, social and environmental impacts of wastes generated from slaughtering activities and to make this effective in collaboration with regulatory bodies, developing strategies as well legal enforcement of environmental tools as to implement in their premises and environmental trainings are the most recommended ideas.
