Abstract
The purpose of this research was to examine the association between parenting styles and self-efficacy with prosocial behavior in secondary schools students aged approximately 14-18 years in Kolfe Keranyo subcity, Addis Ababa. A quantitative research approach was employed. Specifically, a correlational and cross-sectional design was utilized on a sample size of 238 Grade 9 and Grade 10 students selected from Tiwled Tesfa Secondary and Preparatory School. The instruments utilized for the gathering of data included adapted scales measuring different dimensions of parenting styles(PSS), the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children (SEQ-C), and the Prosocial Tendencies Measure (PTM-R) whose reliability was established by the pilot study conducted on 23 participants(10% of the sample size). For the data analysis, this research applied descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression using SPSS statistical software.
The descriptive results revealed that authoritative parenting was the most predominant style experienced by the respondents (34.9%), and surprisingly, the highest rate of neglectful parenting style was also reported by 27.7%. As for the prosocial behaviour, high rates of altruism and anonymous prosocial behaviors were found, whereas public help got the lowest rate. In terms of self-efficacy subscales, it was found that the emotional self-efficacy had a higher mean score compared to academic self-efficacy and social self-efficacy, implying that students felt relatively more confident in their ability to control emotions internally. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that the set of independent variables accounted for 23.4% of the variance in adolescent prosocial behaviors. Self-efficacy was found to be the most effective predictor of prosocial behavior among all the variables. On the other hand, the variable of parental neglectful showed negative significant effect on prosocial behavior when compared to authoritative parenting while other parenting styles showed no significant differences. The results indicate that having confidence in oneself internally and establishing positive parent-child relationships are key aspects of nurturing prosocial adolescents within the urban environment.
