Abstract
The ligand dpamc (2,2’-dipyridylammoniumchloride) has been synthesized from
dpa (2,2’-dipyridylamine) and acyl chloride via acylation reaction and
characterized on the basis of NMR , UV/Vis and elemental analysis. The Cu (II)
complex of this ligand was also synthesized and characterized on the basis of
spectral data (UV/Vis, AAS), molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, and
elemental analysis. The complex formed is proposed to have a square planar
geometry. The ratio of the ligand to Cu (II) in the complex is 2:1 in which each
dpa unit acts as a bidentate ligand, coordinating through both pyridyl nitrogens
to form a six-membered chelate ring. The Cu (II) complex is a 1:2 electrolyte
implying that there are two chloride ions with a complex. The chloride content in
the outer sphere of the complex was determined by treatment with silver nitrate
solution and gave a positive result.
