Cross-Sectional Study of Bovine Mastitis in Urban and Peri-Urban Dairy Farms of HARAR Town

Abstract

A cross sectional study of bovine mastitis was carried out from September 2009 to May 2010 in urban and peri-urban dairy farms of Harar town to determine the prevalence of mastitis on cow and quarter level , to isolate and identify etiological agents for mastitis and to assess the effect of associated risk factors. From 36 dairy farms 34 1 lactating cows were investigated. Of these 143 cows (4 1.9%) were Positive by California Mastitis Test (CMT) and 138 cows (40.5%) were culture positive for mastitis. Among culture positive cows 23 (6.8%) and 11 5 (3 3.7%) were infected clinically and sub clinically Respectively. Out of 1364 quarters 51 were blind, 22X ( 17.4%) were positive by CMT and 214 ( 16. by culture. Frequency of clinical and sub clinical mastitis on quarters were 41 (3 .1%) and 173 ( 13.2%), respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that prevalence of mastitis was significantly higher in third parity than the lira (p<0.05) in early lactate on sage than in late (p<0.05). Hygiene, ventilation and drainage were also found to be significantly associated with the occurrence of mastitis (p<0.05). However, herd (farm) size and quarters position were not significantly associated with mastitis (p>0.05). From the isolated mastitis causing pathogens Staphylococcus species were the most prevalent (42 .9%) Followed by Streptococcus species (28 .3Enlerobaeter "Coli forms" (20.0%) and other gram positive bacteria (8.8%). Through the questions ire survey it was confirmed that poor farm management, unhygienic milking practices, lack of knowledge about the role of risk factors on mastitis occurrence and hidden (subclinical) mastitis are reasons for the increased prevalence of mastitis (40 .5%) in the study area. Antimicrobial susceptibility test situ wed that most of the isolates in this study were found to be highly sensitive to cloxacillin, gentamycin and amoxicillin, and moderately sensitive to ampicillin and ox tetracycline However, Staphylococcus s and Streptococcus species were highly resistant to streptomycin and penicillin.
