dc.description.abstractEvery group activity requires some sort of leadership to organize and direct the groups' effort towards previously decided goals. Success of different organizations, especially educational institutions depend on effective and efficient principals. The main purpose of this study was undertaken to asses the experience of principals in government secondary schools in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, towards their visionary, instructional and participatory approaches of leadership. The study also deals in examining the actual experience and problems of principals in government schools. The research methodology employed in the study was descriptive survey. Accordingly, a questionnaire for teachers and principals was prepared, pilot-tested and administered to a sample size of 266 teachers and 66 principals. Out of the total distributed questionnaires 94.7% of the teachers' respondents and 90.3% of the principals 'were properly filled and returned and used for the analysis. In the analysis of the data descriptive statistical techniques such as frequency, percentages and chi-square testing were used. The findings of the study revealed that principals are less effective in their leadership due to lack of experience and qualification in the profession. Moreover, the principals are predominantly occupied with managerial functions than instructional leadership. The principal's role in promoting and facilitating the participation of the stakeholders in their leadership is also very limited. Finally, based on the findings, recommendation on capacity building and empowering the principals to do their work effectively on instructional leadership, encouraging participatory approach of leadership and the involvement of the stakeholders in school activities were forwarded .en_US
