dc.description.abstractThe main purpose of this study was to investigate factors that afj'ect the participation of Woman in FAL programs. The study was confined to two woredas, Mensibu and Nejo in west Wollega Zone of Oromia Region. A total of 125 female adult learners, 18 facilitators, 3 zone and woreda women's affair experts, and 3 zone and woreda education experts were used as a data source which were selected using simple and availability sampling techniques. To obtain the required information questionnaires, interview, FGD and observations were used as data gathering tools. In this study both quantitative and qualitative methods were used. The data gathered through questionnaires were quantitatively analyzed using fi"equency count and percentage and intelpreted whereas the data gathered through interview and FGD were qualitatively analyzed and triangulated with the quantitative data. Besides, information obtained through observations was also used to complement the quantitative and qualitative data. The data analysis resulted in the following findings: family - related factors like the impact of heavy work load at home, fa mily 's economic status, the existence of family 's influence and family 's educational background, and socio- cultural fa~lOrs like negative allitude and practice of the society towards women's participation, harmfill traditional practices, under estimation and devaluation of women 's potential and lack of initiation and appreciation about the value of women 's participation as well as program - related factors like participation in identifying training needs and problems ,participation in selecting contents ,learning experiences ,objectives, place of training, resource materials and duration o.f training ]!"erefollnd to be the majorfactors affecting the participation o.fwomen in FAL programs .Based on these major findings conclusions were made. Finally, based on the findings and cone/usions certain recommendations were made. Some of these include: awareness mising activities should be carried out; focal person should be assigned for adult education in each \\Ioreda; the provision of FAL program should be integrated Ivith livelihoods of the learners; FAL fac ilitators should get adequate initial and reji-esher training and reglliar supervision o.l FAL centers should be conducted by responsible bodies.en_US
