Abstract
This study analyzed the contents of some common commercial billboard advertisements
in Addis Ababa. The contents analyzed include; photographs, messages, color and appeal
strategy .As the demand to advertise products and services through billboards tend to
grow the question over effective communication become a serious issue. This study thus,
conducted so, as to answer such questions raised in billboard communication.
Qualitative content analysis has been used to analyze the contents .A ccording to the
analysis made billboards those planted along side major roads mostly use human
photographs, particularly women's photograph and these could be done with out any
connection women's have to the product/se rvice advertised. Apart from this most
billboards have been overlooked by target customers, although there are also some
billboards those achieved best communication through their messages and will have well
mixed elements to lIy to catch viewer's allention.
Concerning photographs, there is plenty of mismatch, .. will be found in those billboard
ads selected for analysis. Beyond this appeal strategies used in mosl billboards are weak
and can not able to catch viewer's altention . The messages accompanied with the product
/services was also detailed, straightforward and embrace each information about the
product. In association to the appeal strategy used most billboards used, an ornate
design which means over decoration, due to such inconveniences billboards those
selected for analysis and billboards those deployed mostly in the city of Addis Ababa
unable to communicate the rightful information about the product /service advertised.
