Abstract
A cross-sectional study was conducted on apparent ly health y slaughtered swine a l Addis Ababa abattoir from October 2004 10 February 2005. The objectives of th e study were to estimate the prevalence of Salmone/la in slaughter swine, to find out Salmonella serovars distribution. to detennine the antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella isolates to selected ant imicrobial agents and to invt!stigate the association between some potent ial ri sk factors and Salmonella contamination of carcasses, A to tal of 849 samples, consisting of cecal content (n =:; 278), mesenteric lymph nodes (n -= 278). carcass swab (n == 277) and scalding water (0 = 16) samples were collected. The samples were examined for the presence of Salmonella following standard techniques and procedu res recommended by the Intemational Organization for Standardization
(ISO).
