Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to identify the major causes of students dropout in
secondary schools of Jida Woreda. In the study researcher used qualitative research
approach . The qualitative data was collected using interview questions for parents, woreda
education office vice head, principals of sample schools and focus group discussion took
place with students and teachers and document analysis took place from different report of
schools. The analysis was performed using descriptive method. The results of the research
indicated that there are three main causes of student's dropout in the secondary schools,
specifically: they are:(i) social factors ( large family sizes, parental education level, home
/parental service , domestic work and agricultural activity).(ii) Economic factors ( cost of
uniform or clothe, cost of educational materials), (iii)Educational /school factors ( shortage
of class room ,poor infrastructures/poor facility, poor teaching and learning process.
Finally, the combined effect of social, economic and educational or school factors were
causes student's dropout from the school. Based on findings, it was recommended that all
educational stake holders like: government, non-governmental organizations and
community need to provided educational materials for the most marginalized or vulnerable
students and improve school facility .
