Abstract

The purpose oJ this study was to investigate the effort oj grade ten English teachers to motivate and increase students' participation in the English classes because motivation is believed to be the most important and decisive Jactor to bring a relatively permanent change on the students' academic perJormances. In order to collect valid and relevant inJormation about the study, questionnaire Jor the students, classroom observation and an interview Jor the English teachers were conducted Sixty students from eight sections oj grade ten in 2003 and Jour English teachers who have been teaching the sample students were selected as a sample. After the selection, the students and teachers were made to give their responses about the effort oJ their teachers to motivate and increase students ' participation in the English lessons. 21 items oJ th e questionnaire Jor the students were administered Moreover, Jour English teachers were interviewed Furthermor e, each English teacher was observed three tim es. Finally, quantitati ve and qualitative technique s were used to analyze th e data. The data collected through the actual classroom observation, th e interview and the open ended items oJthe questionnaire were analyzed qualitatively where as th e data gathered via th e closed-ended items of the students' questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively. The results oJ the study showed that, having created a good relationship with th e students so as to motivate and increase students' participation in the English lessons, the teachers tried to organize and manage the class room in order to enable learners carry out effective teaching learning process. Though they didn't encourage learners to evaluate themselves by using appropriate teaching aids and by giving additional activities and Jurther practices so as to help students who need due attention., they did an undeniable and encouraging job with great effort by providing more opportunities Jor students to participate actively. As a result, most students were motivated and aroused to learn their lessons properly and in an interesting way. Furthermore, most teachers used rewards such as pen, pencil, exercise books etc and also they used praise words such as excellent, bravo, great, keep it up etc. in order to motivate increase and attract the students' attention towards actively following their lessons. However, some teachers were not in a good position by providing such opportunities to bring a meaningful change on students' participation so as to help students who need due attention. Since their efJort to do more was less effective, a number of students' effort to in crea se th eir participation towards actively Jollowing their le ssons so as to achieve the intended goal was minimum . In general, though the teach ers' effort in th e selected school was some how good and effective, they should coopera ti vely work hard so as to achieve the desired intended goals because some teachers' effort to teach students in th e English lessons so as to achieve the intended goal was not as such effective and satisJactory.
