Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to comparatively analyze the provisions of the FDRE
Constitution on environmental protection and subsidiary environmental laws with principles of
environmental protection under the Gada system. Specifically, the paper is focused on the
comparison and analysis of laws and principles on water resource protection, forest protection
and the protection of wild life in both systems.
The researcher adopted a qualitative research methodology and Employed in-depth interview
with key informants, focus group discussions, field observation and documentary data collection
techniques to collect research data.
The analysis of the study indicated that the FDRE Constitution, subsidiary environmental laws
and the Gada system have rules and principles that provided for the protection of water
resources, forest and wild life. However, on the specified study area, the practical
implementation weighted to the side of the Gada system. The study recommends that
environmental protection in Ethiopia will be enhanced if the Gada system principles are
recognized and integrated in the interpretation and application of the state laws by state
institutions.
