Abstract
The objectives of this study were to explorer adolescents' attitude toward seeking
counseling, and to examine its relation with self-concealment, self-esteem and gender.
The data gathered through three Likert-type scales(atlitude toward seeking counseling,
self-esteem and self-concealment scales) ji-om a total of 395 (J 35 females and 260 males)
high school adolescent students attending grades 9 to J 2 in Debre Markos town, who
were selected via proportional stratified random sampling, were analyzed using mean,
standard deviation, bivariate correlation, t-test and multiple regression. The mean and
one sample t-test revealed that adolescents had negative counseling seeking attitude.
Counseling seeking attitude was related negatively and significantly with both selfconcealment
and self-esteem. Gender also predicted counseling seeking attitude, being
females associated with positive attitude. Sel/concealment, sel/esteem and gender taken
together significantly predicted attitude towards seeking counseling Self-concealment
was found to be the best predictor among the variables entered in the equation followed
by gender. On the basis of these results, discussion and conclusion were made. Finally,
some recommendations are forwarded for possible intervention and jiJture research.
